Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt? (And How to Make Your Coils Last Longer)

Wondering why your vape tastes burnt or how to make your coils last longer? Learn quick pod system maintenance tips from the team at K Town Vape in Kennesaw.

Nothing ruins a good session faster than a harsh, burnt taste in the back of your throat. Whether you are using a refillable pod system or a sub-ohm tank, dry hits and burnt coils are the most common frustration vapers face.

The good news? Most coil burnout is completely preventable. Here is a breakdown from K Town Vape on why your coils burn out quickly and how to double their lifespan.

1. Always Prime Your New Coils and Pods

The number one reason coils burn instantly is a lack of priming. When you put fresh e-liquid into a brand-new pod or coil, the cotton inside is completely dry. If you fire the device immediately, you will scorch the cotton before it ever absorbs liquid.

  • The Fix: After filling a new pod or tank, let it sit untouched for 5 to 10 minutes to let the cotton fully saturate. For extra protection, take a few light draws without pressing the fire button to draw juice into the wicks.

2. Mind Your E-Liquid Sweetness

E-liquids packed with heavy artificial sweeteners taste great, but they are known "coil killers." As the liquid heats up, the sugar caramelizes and forms a dark, sticky residue around the heating element. This buildup insulates the coil, leading to poor flavor and early burnout.

  • The Fix: If you notice your coils dying after just two or three days, try switching to cleaner, fruit-based, or menthol flavor profiles that leave less residue on the cotton.

3. Keep Your Pod Filled Above the Wicking Holes

Riding your e-liquid level down to the absolute bottom of the pod forces your coil to heat dry cotton. Once cotton burns even a little bit, that burnt flavor stays in the pod permanently.

  • The Fix: Refill your pod as soon as the e-liquid level drops to the top of the exposed wicking ports on the coil.

4. Stop Chain Vaping

Taking multiple long draws back-to-back doesn't give the cotton enough time to absorb fresh juice between hits. The dry cotton overheats, resulting in a harsh hit.

  • The Fix: Give your device 15 to 30 seconds to rest between hits, especially if you take longer draws.
