How to Prevent Burnt Hits & Extend Vape Coil Life | K Town

A practical maintenance guide troubleshooting why vape coils burn out prematurely and taste harsh. It provides step-by-step instructions on proper coil priming, adjusting wattage ranges, avoiding chain vaping, and picking correct VG/PG ratios to double coil longevity.

How to Prevent Burnt Hits and Make Your Vape Coils Last Twice as Long

There is nothing quite as frustrating as installing a brand-new coil or pod, taking a draw, and immediately tasting a harsh, burnt cotton hit. While replacement coils are an expected part of vape upkeep, premature burnout is usually entirely preventable.

At K Town Vapor Lounge in Kennesaw, GA, we want you to get maximum life and pure flavor out of every coil pack you buy. Follow these four essential rules to stop dry hits and double your coil lifespan.

Step 1: Always Prime Your Coils Correctly

Never fire a newly installed coil right out of the package. Dry organic cotton burns instantly if heated without full liquid saturation:

  1. Drip Directly: Apply 3 to 5 drops of e-liquid directly onto the exposed cotton wicking ports inside the new coil before installing it into your tank or pod.

  2. Fill and Wait: Assemble your tank, fill it with juice, and let it sit undisturbed for 7 to 10 minutes so the cotton fully saturates through capillary action.

  3. Dry Draws: Take a few subtle draws through the mouthpiece without pressing the power button to pull liquid deep into the core wicks.

Step 2: Mind Your Wattage Operating Range

Every coil has a recommended wattage range laser-etched onto the metal casing (e.g., 40W – 80W / Best 55W – 65W).

  • Over-powering: Running your device above the recommended wattage scorches the cotton faster than liquid can resaturate.

  • Under-powering: Running power too low causes liquid to pool on the coil without fully vaporizing, leading to gurgling, spitback, and premature caramelization.

  • Pro Tip: Start at the lowest recommended wattage setting on a new coil and gradually ramp up by 2–3 Watts every few puffs until you hit your sweet spot.

Step 3: Avoid Heavy "Chain Vaping"

Taking repeated, rapid draws without pausing doesn't give the cotton wicks enough time to draw fresh e-liquid back into the center of the coil. Pausing for 10 to 15 seconds between puffs allows the liquid pressure to equalize, preventing dry spots.

Step 4: Watch Out for High-Sweetener Liquids

E-liquids containing heavy amounts of artificial sweeteners (sucralose) caramelize when heated, leaving a dark, sticky residue ("coil gunk") on your heating element. If you notice your coils turning dark after just a few days, ask the team at K Town Vapor Lounge to recommend cleaner-burning bakery, menthol, or fruit options!
