Traveling soon and wondering what to do with your vape? Whether you're heading out on vacation or flying for work, it's important to know the rules around carrying vape devices and e-liquids on airplanes. Here's everything you need to know before you pack your bags.
1. Yes, You Can Bring Your Vape—But Not in Checked Bags
According to TSA guidelines, vape pens, mods, and batteries must go in your carry-on or personal item, not in checked luggage. This is due to the fire risk lithium-ion batteries pose in cargo holds. So keep your device on you, just like you would a phone or laptop.
2. E-Liquids Must Follow the 3-1-1 Rule
Bringing e-juice? That’s fine, too—but it must be packed like any other liquid. You’re allowed to bring liquids in containers no larger than 3.4 oz (100 mL), all of which must fit inside one quart-sized clear plastic bag. This includes bottles of vape juice, so choose your favorite flavors wisely!
3. Don’t Use or Charge Your Vape On the Plane
This is a big one: you are NOT allowed to use or charge your vape device on the plane. That means no puffing mid-air and no plugging your vape into the seat outlet. Doing so could get you into serious trouble, including fines or being flagged by airline staff.
4. Know the Laws at Your Destination
What’s legal at home might not be legal where you're going. If you're flying to another state or country, check local vaping laws. Some places have strict bans on vape devices or flavored products, and customs agents may confiscate them upon arrival.
5. Protect Your Vape From Pressure Changes
Cabin pressure changes during flight can cause tanks to leak. To avoid sticky messes, empty your tank before flying, or bring a disposable device instead. You can also store your vape upright in a sealed bag to contain any potential leaks.
